PADI Divemaster
Course Overview
A Dive master is the first leadership level in the PADI progression.
This rating denotes an individual who:
- Has a high level of personal diving skill
- Possesses instructor level knowledge of diving theory
- Has had significant training in how to assist an instructor during training activities
- Is able to assume a role of responsibility for the welfare of other divers in his/her charge
Duties Of A PADI Divemaster
- Assist a teaching status PADI Instructor in confined water and open water training of divers
- Independently guide Open Water Diver course students on the tour portion of training dives 2 through 5 at a ratio of 2 students per certified divemaster
- Conduct the PADI Environmental Orientation dives so long as the divemaster is insured
- Generally supervise both training and non-training related activities by planning, organising, and directing dives
- Independently teach the PADI Snorkeling Course
Prerequisites
- PADI Advanced Open Water Diver certification (or equivalent)
- PADI Rescue Diver certification (or equivalent)
- An approved medical exam form for a medical examination conducted within the past year. The form signed by a licensed physician and stating that the candidate is fit for diving
- CPR and First Aid certified (within 2 years)
- 20 Logged dives by the start of the course
- 60 Logged dives by the end of the course
- Minimum age: 18 years old
Note: A CPR and first Aid course can be made available at an additional cost
Course Structure
To fulfill these training objectives, the PADI Divemaster course consists of three modules:
- Knowledge development
- Watermanship and pool skills
- Practical application/internship
Divemaster Performance Requirements
- Pass each of the eight sections of the final exam
- Complete and turn in all knowledge reviews
- Complete and turn in an Emergency Assistance Plan
- Complete and turn in an Underwater Map
- Complete the skills and stamina module with a minimum of 12 points
- 400 yard swim (8 laps)
- 15 minutes treading water (last 2 minutes hands out of water)
- 800 yard snorkel swim (16 laps)
- 100 yard inert diver tow in full scuba gear
- Complete a Rescue Assessment
- Complete a Water Skills Assessment
- Complete a Skills Circuit to demonstration quality
- Complete an Exchanged Equipment Drill
- Conduct a simulated or actual Divemaster Conducted Program (lead dive)
- Intern one complete Open Water scuba class - classroom, pool, and four ocean dives
- Intern one dive in a continuing education program
Equipment
Student to provide: PADI Open Water Manual with Recreational Dive Planner and The Wheel, PADI Advanced Manual, PADI Rescue Manual with Accident Management Work Slate, PADI Divemaster Manual, Instructor Manual, Instructor Slates, PADI Encyclopedia, Diving Knowledge Workbook, Log Book, and the PADI Divemaster processing fee. The Divemaster video is recommended but not required.
